Worldwide Arms: Some Statements

Militarisation in Whose interest? Who pay for?
- Barkat Ullah Maruf

There are at least 640 million firearms in existence in the world today. That’s one every ten people on the planet.

8million weapons have been destroyed in the last ten years and nearly 8 million are made every year. So 10 times more are produced than destroyed.

About 12 billion units of military small arms ammunition are produced every year- that’s roughly two bullets for every man, woman and child on the planet.

Annually, the world spends US$ 1 trillion on defense, around US$325 bn on agriculture and only US$60 bn on aid.

By 2020, the number of deaths and injuries from war and violence could overtake the numbers of death caused by killer diseases like malaria and measles.

Every year, small arms kill more people than the bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki put together.
